I called Emma 2 weeks ago, seeking a quote to notarize a document that I urgently need, initially she offered to do all the other needed procedures for me and was very friendly over that first call. However, after instructing me to send her an email with the information of what I needed I received no response for over a week, after I called her again to remind her she said I would receive a response in an hour or so. I received no response again for over a week, and the third time I called her she was not as polite as the first time…. She just told me to bare with in a condescending tone because she had a lot of work and said to me “you could try and look for other options but I am the only notary in the area that can do this so good luck with that”.It has now been a week again after that call in which she said she will call me to schedule an appointment and 0 response.This is a service that I would be paying for, so ai don’t appreciate feeling like I am being done a favor, furthermore I find her to be very unprofessional

After initially reaching out to Emma to inquire about their services, I was instructed to send an email outlining my case. Despite promptly sending the email, I did not receive any acknowledgment of receipt. Upon following up the next day, I was informed that my email had been seen and that Emma would get back to me.However, despite numerous calls and follow-up emails, I have yet to receive a response. This lack of communication and follow-through is highly concerning and has left me feeling frustrated and disregarded.As a potential client seeking assistance, I expected a basic level of professionalism and courtesy in our interactions. It is disappointing to have been led to believe that my case was being considered, only to be met with silence and unanswered inquiries.

In May 2021, upon receiving a job offer to teach at a university in China, I contacted several notaries in the Exeter area to begin the process of legalising my documents for the work permit. Of all the notaries who responded, Emma was the fastest and, more importantly, the most experienced with the process. She informed me straight away that the Chinese embassy have some special requirements, including:- all the documents need to be bound together with a ribbon- the application form needs to be completed digitally, but signed by hand- the documents need to be taken to the Chinese visa centre to be legalised in personEmma was able to give me a very reasonable quote, and answered all my questions, in person and via email, about the 3 stages of the legalisation process (notarization, FCDO apostille, legalisation by Chinese embassy). After taking scans, Emma returned my documents to me in less than 1 week, bound together with a ribbon and stamped as required, ready for me to send off to the FCDO for the apostille.If you are looking for a notary service to help you with documents for a foreign work permit or visa, I would not hesitate to recommend Emma for her vast experience, professionalism, and efficiency in this process. She is an invaluable person to have in your corner when trying to understand all of the legal jargon and complicated steps involved when applying for a work permit yourself. What is a Notary?

In England and Wales, a Notary Public is a highly specialised lawyer and member of the third and oldest branch of the legal profession (including solicitors and barristers). Notaries are appointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury on authority from the Crown with the Archbishop of Canterbury’s jurisdiction being exercised through the Court of Faculties, which is one of the oldest courts in England and Wales.

Notaries deal with the preparation and authentication of documents for use overseas. The office of notary is an internationally recognised legal one. This means that a notary’s signature and seal of office lends authenticity to a document, which can subsequently be relied on by overseas individuals and institutions.

Not all solicitors are notaries and we number around a mere 770 in England and Wales. As a notary, I am neither a “professional witness” or a rubber-stamping exercise. If you have been asked to get a document notarised, then my role is as follows:

To ensure that you understand the document and intend to be bound by it.
To ensure that you have the authority to execute that document.
To authenticate the contents of that document.

About Me

Having worked in the financial services industry after graduating in law from the University of Exeter, I qualified as a solicitor and practised for a number of years in private client law. I undertook my notarial practice qualification at University College London and qualified as a Notary Public in 2017. I now focus on my notarial practice, whilst acting as an Associate Lecturer in law at UWE.

I am an active member of Devon and Somerset Law Society and I chair the International Relations Sub Committee, which ensures that I help maintain well entrenched and established links with lawyers in overseas jurisdictions.

Outside of work, I travel extensively, but also enjoy winding down with a good book!
